Basic Survival Kit

Water - At least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

Food - At least enough for 3 to 7 days:

  • Non-perishable packaged or canned food and juices

  • Foods for infants or the elderly

  • Snack foods

  • Non-electric can opener

  • Cooking tools, fuel

  • Paper plates, plastic utensils

  • Blankets, pillows, etc.

Clothing - Seasonal, rain gear, sturdy shoes

First Aid Kit

Prescription Drugs and Other Medicines

Special Items - Needed by babies and the elderly

Toiletries - Hygiene items, moisture wipes

Flashlight - With several set of fresh batteries

Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio with fresh batteries

Cash - Banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended periods

Keys

Credit Cards and ATM Cards

Driver's License - If your neighborhood is badly damaged, law enforcement officials may not let you re-enter without proper ID.

Toys, Books, and Games

Important Documents - In a Waterproof Container - Insurance papers, medical records, bank account numbers, social security number, etc.

Tools - Keep a set with you during the storm

Cars and Trucks - Fill all vehicle fuel tanks. Top-off when gas is available

Extra Gasoline - Add fuel stabilizer and store in approved gasoline containers. Replace fuel every year.

Home Owner's Survival Kit

  • Hurricane shutters or plywood to cover windows and doors

  • Concrete anchors (Tapcons) or anchor bolts/nuts or lag screws and washers to secure shutters or plywood

  • Sturdy ladder (do not work on the roof of your home during the storm)

  • Additional tools - hammers, pry bars, battery powered drills

  • Bungee cords

  • Tarps

  • Rope

  • Wooden lath and nails or screws to secure tarps

  • Large supply of plastic zip-lock bags to store household items

  • Optional - Generator, heavy gauge extension cords, extra gasoline stored in approved containers with stabilizer added, box fans, portable TV

Appropriate Items From the Basic Survival Kit Plus:

  • Medications (7 day supply)

  • Medical support equipment - oxygen, walkers, wheelchairs, dressings, feeding equipment, etc. If you are dependent on oxygen, acquire a portable oxygen unit.

  • Food for special dietary needs (7 day supply)

  • Name and phone number of your doctor, home health agency, hospital, next-of-kin, etc.

Pet Survival Kit

  • Current photo of pet

  • Immunization records

  • Medications

  • Ample supply of food and water

  • A carrier or cage

  • Dogs: Muzzle and leash

  • Cats: Portable cat box and litter
